Ros Fernley, who is helping Tim Dodd-Wilson's month-long journey with inflatable duck Lily, spotted the St Christopher piece in coins they had collection for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

She said: "We counted the money from Oxford (£500, very pleased) but are worried someone might have given it by accident.

"I guess there is a chance they thought we needed it more than they did."

Describing it 'slightly bigger than a 5 pence piece', she added: "We are keeping it safe.

"We may be fussing unnecessarily but we both felt we would be upset if lost a treasured item."
