THE Bishop of Oxford has called for action to prevent climate change causing 'apocalyptic' damage as he prepares to lobby MPs alongside thousands of people today.

The Rt Rev Steven Croft could be joined by more than 15,000 people in Westminster urging politicians to take action on the environmental crisis.

Organisers of The Time is Now lobby say people from 99 per cent of the UK's constituencies have signed up for the march, co-ordinated by the Climate Coalition and Greener UK, with MPs set to meet their constituents stationed in the area.

In his latest blog on the Diocese of Oxford website, the Rt Rev Croft wrote: "We are meeting and marching and lobbying because the time is now to arrest the emission of greenhouse gases which are causing such lasting damage to the Earth."

He added: "As we look to the other planets in the solar system and beyond, it is terrible but not difficult to imagine what could happen to us.

"We are complicit in the creation of an environmental catastrophe which is already changing the climate.

"Greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise. Global heating continues and is likely to accelerate as a variety of feedback loops are engaged.

"Life on Earth is about to change in apocalyptic ways during the remainder of this century if we continue to do next to nothing."

Today's march is expected to run from 1pm until 4pm. At 2pm, campaigners are set to ring thousands of alarm clocks, mobile phone alarms and sirens, alongside church bells in the area, to symbolise 'the time is now' to act.

Last month, MPs approved a motion to declare an environment and climate emergency, while the House of Lords will today debate a target to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.

This should pass into law this week and campaigners will be pushing their MPs to back the policies needed to achieve the new net zero target.

Activists want an Environment Bill to clean up polluted air, tackle plastic pollution and restore nature, plus legally binding targets and a powerful independent watchdog to enforce environmental laws.
