A MOTION supporting the existing local plan for South Oxfordshire has been passed by Didcot Town Council.

Councillors fear the local plan, which was agreed late last year, could be scrapped by the new Lib Dem and Green coalition.

A meeting of the council signed up to support the Labour group's motion that called for the plan to remain in place to ensure the town would not face speculative housing developments.

South Oxfordshire District Council passed its Local Plan last December and agreed to allow the building of 28,500 new homes there over the next 15 years.

Now newly-elected councillors, who seized control of the authority last month, want to change the plan.

Many are opposed to building on the Green Belt.

Planning officers have urged councillors to make no changes to the plan and allow it to be decided by Government inspectors, as had been expected before May's local elections.
