A STUDENT from Oxford is part of a choir that has won a national BBC competition for the second time in four years.

Florrie Antoniou, 17, who has lived in Oxford for ten years, is a pupil at the prestigious Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in London, and sang in her school choir who won the BBC Songs of Praise Senior School Choir of the Year 2019 competition.

The final, which was aired on Sunday, June 2 on BBC1, saw the Tring Park School Chamber Choir, also known as the Tring Park 16, compete in the senior category against NChant - Kent and Francis Holland School Senior Chamber Choir based in London.

The choir impressed the judging panel - comprised of vocal coach Carrie Grant, JB Gill from boyband JLS; and the tenor Russell Watson - with their performance of ‘Steal Away'.

Miss Antoniou said: "It was a pleasure to participate in the Songs of Praise competition this year, particularly surrounded by such wonderful people. We were so thrilled that all our hard work paid off."

Prior to joining Tring Park School, the singer attended Dragon school in Oxford – a hotbed for acting talent with alumni including Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Emma Watson – for seven years, from 2008 to 2015, where she performed in school plays and musicals.

Miss Antoniou is no stranger to the stage having performed for three seasons with the National Youth Music Theatre and this year, has been accepted into the National Youth Theatre.

Talking about the Tring Park 16's success, Songs of Praise series producer Matthew Napier, said: "Tring Park delivered the quality of sound, the vocal technique and the all-important wow factor. They are deserved winners - again!"

Tring Park director of music, Liz Norriss, said: "The choristers are incredibly committed and passionate about their singing, and were determined to do their very best."
