A PROFESSIONAL golfer accused of sexually abusing a schoolgirl on club grounds has now been cleared of all charges after prosecutors offered no evidence in the case.

It was claimed during a trial held at Oxford Crown Court that Derek Craik, of Oxford Road, Frilford Heath, embarked on a two-week campaign of sexual abuse while he was playing professionally at the Chipping Norton golf club.

The 49-year old had denied six counts alleging historical indecent assault against one teenage girl all alleged to have taken place over a two-week period in the early 2000s.

A jury panel was sent home earlier this month after they reached not guilty verdicts on five of the six counts after eight hours and 47 minutes of deliberations.

After presiding Judge Ian Pringle QC asked the panel as to whether they could reach a verdict on the final remaining count it soon became apparent that they could not.

The Judge thanked the panel for their commitment to the case and they were duly sent home.

At a hearing held at the same court yesterday the Crown Prosecution Service offered 'no evidence' on the final remaining count and a not guilty verdict was entered.

During the trial earlier this month Mr Craik took to the witness box to profess his innocence.

Asked if he had ever been left alone with the girl on the 18-hole course or taken her out on a golf buggy, he said no as he would have been 'too busy' at the time.

The golf course had very few secluded areas, Mr Craik told jurors.
