WINDS up to 35mph are set to batter the county today.

Rain is also forecast this morning and temperatures are set to peak at a chilly 16 degrees.

Following a yellow weather warning this week and the cancellation of a major Oxford street party today, the second Saturday in June looks set to be more miserable than dangerous.

According to the Met Office forecast at 6am today, heavy rain is set to pelt Oxford until about 10am.

The wind is then set to pick up through the day, with strong gusts as fast as 35mph.

The windy forecast is part of the reason that Oxford City Council took the last-minute decision yesterday to cancel today's Big Green Day Out event in Broad Street which has been months in the planning.

The council revealed that the wind speeds were more than double the 20mph safety limit on the gazebos it was planning use.

The sky is set to stay overcast throughout the day, except that at 6pm the sun is set to burst through the clouds and bathe the county is warmth and light until sunset.
