TWO Oxfordshire MPs and a council leader brandished the Oxford Mail's front page like a weapon ahead of a crunch meeting with the Transport Minister in 1995.

Oxford West and Abingdon member John Patten, left, Vale of White Horse District Council leader Terry Cox, centre, and Wantage MP Robert Jackson were photographed outside the House of Commons just ahead of meeting Brian Mawhinney on February 1 that year.

The meeting was over plans for a new, bigger London Oxford Airport.

Although there had been an Oxford airport at Kidlington since 1935, in 1981 the freeholder was sold by Oxford City Council to private aviation investors and the idea of having a major airport in the county started being discussed.

Clearly, the Oxford Mail of the day was not having any of it.
