THE Vikings weren't the only ones who did battle at this year's Harwell Feast.

While the Ulfhrafnar re-enactment group brandished their axes in the annual parade down the High Street on Monday, teenagers battled it out in a new inflatable Wipe Out zone on the recreation ground.

The village WI also kicked out their heels in the float competition, but were vanquished by the superheroes and princesses from Little Pippins Pre-School, who were crowned best float for a second year in a row.

But the battles were all in good spirits and feast committee member Sharon Palmer said the party was one of the best yet.

Ms Palmer, who moved from Harwell to Minster Lovell near Witney but still helps organise the annual extravaganza, said: "It was a really good year – it was very well attended, all the stall holders felt it was very successful and the atmosphere was friendly as always."

More than 4,000 people joined this year's feast, which also included dancing from Abingdon Traditional Morris, a slew of vintage vehicles and even Filipino street food.

Tracing its origins back hundreds of years, the feast today raises hundreds of pounds each year for village organisations.

After counting up their totals over the coming weeks, the committee will open applications for funding in June or July, with the aiming of being able to make some sizeable grants in October.

Recent funds have gone to a bursary for local schoolchildren to join trips abroad.
