HERE is a round-up of some of the sentencing hearings which took place at Oxford Crown Court and Oxford Magistrates' Court between Tuesday May 14 and Friday May 17.

  • Tuesday

David Higgins, 34, of Chalvey Road, Bicester, admitted two counts of arson which the court heard were a failed 'suicide attempt'.

He was handed eight months in jail for the first arson and 20 months for the second, both to be served concurrently and suspended for two years.

He must also complete 25 days rehabilitation activity requirement and 180 hours unpaid work.

  • Wednesday

Graham Lewis, 59, of Milton Road in Cowley, was convicted of wounding with intent after three hours and 44 minutes of deliberations.

He was jailed at the end of his trial for eight years and made subject to a restraining order against his victim for 10 years.

  • Thursday

Mark Lawrence, 22, of Greenfinch Road, Didcot admitted one count of assault by beating and one of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship.

He abused his ex-partner in an eight-month campaign of controlling behaviour and brutal violence and during one of those episodes he held his victim against a wall by her neck and pulled a knife on her.

Lawrence was jailed for 22 months suspended for two years and made subject to a community order to include 200 hours of unpaid work and 15 days rehabilitation activity requirement.

He must also complete the Building Better Relationships programme to tackle his offending and pay compensation to his victim of £500 and a victim surcharge.

Lawrence was also made subject to a restraining order.

Amer Hajjaj of Oxford Pizza And Kebab Shop, 68 St Clement's Street, was found guilty of failing to comply with three food hygiene notices.

Prosecutors said the takeaway - which closed down over rat droppings in its kitchens - had 'repeatedly' ignored orders to improve standards.

These were over the poor condition of the kitchen floor, a lack of staff training, and having no food safety system.

He was fined £7,187, which included the council's legal costs of £4,087, to be paid within 14 days.

  • Friday

Danny Rayson, 28, of Pine Close, Garsington, admitted offences of dangerous driving, driving without a licence and without third party insurance. He was also found to be in contempt of court.

While at his initial sentencing hearing he swore at the presiding Judge and threatened he would punch him in the face.

For contempt he was jailed for one month and for the driving matters he received an eight-month jail term to run consecutively.
