THE controversial decision to scrap a multi-million pound flood scheme in Abingdon will be debated in Parliament tomorrow.

Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran is bringing the issue, as well as delays to the Oxford flood prevention scheme, to the House of Commons as part of an adjournment debate.

The scheme to reduce the risk of flooding in Abingdon was abandoned in January due to spiralling costs.

The Environment Agency had been working with local council and the Thames Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC) on the £5m plans, which centred around building a flood storage area at Abingdon Common.

Oxford's own scheme, meanwhile, secured funding last year but will not be completed until 2024 at the earliest.

The Lib Dem MP said: “In a week where the chair of the Environment Agency has just given a stark warning about flooding, I’m delighted to be holding this debate on an issue that is still fresh in the mind of so many Abingdon and Oxford residents – they have not forgotten the floods in 2007 and neither have I.

“This debate is the perfect opportunity to hear directly from the Government on what can be done to address the frustration of so many residents."

She added residents were 'rightly angry' that the Abingdon scheme had been axed, and the Oxford scheme was moving at a 'snail’s pace'.
