POET Simon Armitage has been elected as an Honorary Fellow of Oxford University’s Trinity College to coincide with the end of his four-year term as Oxford Professor of Poetry.

The news comes hot on the heels of his appointment as Poet Laureate for a fixed term of 10 years.

The President of Trinity College Dame Hilary Boulding said: "Simon is an inspirational artist whose poetry connects to the widest audience.

"The whole Trinity community is thrilled that he has accepted the position of Honorary Fellow of the college and we are enormously excited by his appointment as Poet Laureate."

The poet has been a familiar figure at Trinity during his tenure as Oxford Professor of Poetry between 2015-2019.

He has published 28 collections of poetry and his work has been studied by millions of pupils.

He has received numerous awards for his work and in 2010 was awarded a CBE for services to poetry.

Upon being elected, Mr Armitage said: “Trinity has been my base and provided the perfect foundation for my four years as Oxford Professor of Poetry, and I am proud that the association will continue into the future.”

His final free lecture, entitled When I heard the Learn'd Astronomer, will be given at the Examination Schools in High Street tomorrow at 5.30pm.
