EVERY primary, infant, special and secondary school in Oxfordshire is to receive a copy of a well known book, following the success of a fundraising campaign.
A target-smashing total of £4,660 was crowdfunded to provide a copy of The Lost Words to the county’s pupils.
Organisers ‘The Lost Words Oxfordshire’ - run jointly by Angela Wilson, Andy Egan and Rowena Rouse - say other institutions, including prisons, will also receive the 2017 ‘book of spells’, which has become a bestseller and firm favourite nationwide for its nature-based learning.
Robert Macfarlane, the author, said: “Thank you for helping creativity and nature take root and grow in Oxfordshire’s schools”.
Distribution of the book to schools started this month, with a special presentation event at Whitchurch Primary, in Whitchurch on Thames, last Friday. A Year 6 class also took part in a Lost Words Nature Walk and Poetry Workshop provided by Oxford Poetry Library.
Headteacher Dawn Chesters said: "We are really excited that we have won a copy of the book and are looking forward to our poetry workshop and nature walk.
"Robert Macfarlane has written an inspirational book which is beautifully illustrated by Jackie Morris and we think the campaign to get the book into as many schools as possible is so important."
Along with the book schools will receive a copy of The Lost Words Explorers Guide.
Organiser Mr Egon said the guide was 'full of ideas and activities on how to use the book in a variety of settings and a specially compiled local activity and resource guide which will help teachers bring the book to life'.
