ONE of Oxford's major railway companies is trying to bring in new carriages to reduce problems with over-crowding.

Answering questions from the public during a Q&A session on Twitter, Chiltern Railways' managing director Dave Penney, conceded the company had been experiencing problems with a lack of rolling stock recently.

He said attempts to bring in more carriages had been 'frustrated' but the search was ongoing to relieve pressure adding that all available trains are being used at peak times with the busiest services prioritised.

Mr Penney also answered questions on future services, toilets and ticket prices during the wide ranging discussion yesterday morning.

He said further upgrades to the on-board wi-fi system is expected later this year after passengers complained about the poor service.

Pro rata season tickets for commuters who work less than five days a week may also be introduced soon using a smart card system after requests from passengers.

But there are no plans to re-introduce restaurant cars or on-board refreshment facilities.

Instead retail units at stations are being improved to provide more choice.

The charge to use the toilets at Marylebone, where the Oxford to London service terminates, will also remain because it is needed to pay for dedicated cleaning and maintenance, according to Mr Penney.

The company trialled an off peak service from Princes Risborough to Oxford over the bank holiday and passengers asked if this might be introduced permanently.

Mr Penney said: "Right now there are no plans to introduce this. We were interested to see how many people used it over the bank holiday and will look into whether this might be a suitable change to make in the future."
