A STRETCH of 60mph road is to be halved to 30mph to cope with traffic from a development.

Oxfordshire County Council is proposing to extend the existing 30mph limit on the B4020 south of Burford by 170m.

The council is also proposing to install speed bumps at 100m intervals for 500m on the same stretch, up to the junction with the A40, and to put a new pedestrian crossing on the A40 just to the west of that junction.

The authority said the proposals were being put forward 'for road safety reasons' in response to residential development works to the west of the B4020, opposite Burford Garden Centre.

Drivers and pedestrians are now being asked to comment on the traffic calming plans in a consultation.

Explaining its reasoning in a statement the authority said: "The county council continues its responsibility to consider the provision of convenient and safe movement of motor vehicles and other traffic.
