AN ELDERLY driver suffered 'serious' injuries after becoming trapped in an overturned car near Faringdon.

The A417 Lechlade Road was closed between Canada Lane in Faringdon and Snowswick Lane in Buscot Wick, following the collision this afternoon. 

The air ambulance was sent to the scene of the crash at about 2.40pm, and Oxfordshire County Council has warned that the road could be blocked 'for some time'.

South Central Ambulance Service spokesman David Gallagher said the fire service contacted SCAS after the car 'left the road and ended up in a ditch, trapping the driver.'

He added: "We sent a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance to the scene.

"The elderly male driver had sustained serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

"After initial treatment at the scene from our staff, he was then taken by road to the John Radcliffe Hospital, with the air ambulance team travelling with the patient."

Oxfordshire County Council has warned that disruption could continue 'for some time' and advised drivers to divert.
