A POPULAR Chinese takeaway and cafe has been criticised by inspectors for not keeping any record of food hygiene checks and the condition of its Headington premises.

Members of Oxford City Council’s health team visited Yummy in London Road in February, and awarded the business just one star out of a possible five, which means 'major improvement necessary'.

A report produced for the business following the latest inspection instructed: "You must introduce a written food safety management system."

It added this could be downloaded via the Government's food.gov.uk website and it was also available in Cantonese.

Inspectors stressed the need for daily checks and that these must be recorded, indicating in some cases documentation had not been done since June 2018.

Allergy information was also found to be unavailable.

On the state of the building and cleanliness, inspectors said 'various areas' of the floor in the kitchen needed repairing and wipes needed to be in date.

The report also went on to say: "You must provide hygienic hand dry facilities to all wash hand basins."

Though the overall score was one star, the second lowest rating possible, food hygiene and safety was judged to be 'good'.

Structural requirements, which cover the overall condition of the building and its cleanliness were also found to be 'satisfactory.

The reason for the poor rating came largely from the confidence in management, which was recorded as 'improvement necessary'.

The London Road restaurant had previously received a score of three stars following an inspection in July 2017.

Yummy's owner Ming Liu said: "All existing problems have been rectified, so we are confident that we can get the approval of the inspection officials."

He added he intended to contact the city council to arrange a new inspection.

Despite the falling rating customers on review website TripAdvisor have praised the takeaway and cafe, which serves Chinese, Thai and Malaysian dishes.

One wrote: "Myself and my family love yummy! We regularly eat here particularly when my father is over from Singapore. He needs his fix of authentic Chinese food.

"The food is delicious...staff are welcoming and accommodating."

They added: "It can be hard to get a table as it's so popular, particularly with Chinese students and they do a roaring trade in take aways.

"I haven't a bad word to say about the place."
