FAMILY and friends of late Grove teenager Maisie Norton are gearing up for the fourth memorial match in her honour this Sunday.

The celebration of her memory has become an annual event in Wantage following the 17-year-old’s death from cancer in 2015.

Siblings Ellie and Owen have organised their own elevens to play this year’s opposition, organised by Blake Latimer and Rachel Jones, at Wantage Town Football Club.

And the The Caring Cancer Trust – which proceeds from the game will go to – has this year changed its logo in tribute to the teenager.

The free event, starting at 10.30am, sees the former King Alfred’s student's family and friends come together to celebrate her competitive nature, which helped her six-year battle through illness, including three relapses.

Maisie, who was a keen football player for Wantage for several seasons, had won awards for her fundraising, bravery and tenacity.

Mum Rosie said: “We have always wanted this day for Maisie’s friends to come together to celebrate her.

Oxford Mail:

“Maisie was an inspirational young lady, so much so that the CCT have redesigned their logo in (her) memory.”

The CCT funds non-animal tested research into cancer and take young cancer sufferers – including Maisie – on special holidays.

The new logo features a flower used at Maisie’s funeral and her initials.

The CCT’s Ian MacWatt, who designed the leaflet which includes the tribute to Maisie, explained: “I have (also) included a part of the lovely letter that she wrote.”

Maisie’s letter reads: “I don’t think you know what a great charity Caring Cancer Trust is for bringing us children together and making these trips so magical. My experience is something I will never forget, and I will carry this with me for the rest of my life. You have changed my life and I am thankful for your generosity.”

Dad Steve suggested this could be the penultimate year of the event.: He explained: "I think it will be one more year and then we will call it .

"We will never forget her but we don't ever want the day to be not related to people that knew her."

This year’s hour-long women’s game kicks off at 11.30am, before the 90 minute men’s game at 1.30pm at Alfredian Park. A bouncy castle, welly throwing BBQ and tombola will also take place.

Maisie’s mum also paid tribute to local companies and the team of helpers and family members who have again come together to support the event.

Stewart Saulter has bought the match kits for the third year running, with this year’s strips being Maisie’s favourite colour, pink, and yellow.
