People in Oxford walk the most to work according to figures highlighted by Oxford City Council.

It shows that more than one in four (25.9 per cent) Oxford residents walk to school, shops and the like, daily, the highest percentage in Oxfordshire.

Three in five do so at least once weekly, scoring 60.2 per cent.

The city has just beaten Cambridge which scored 24.6 per cent, but other parts of Oxfordshire haven't performed as well.

Only 13.3 per cent of people walk to work in the Vale of White Horse district while 13.7 per cent of people do so in South Oxfordshire.

The figures come from the latest data available from the Department of Transport and have been highlighted today as part of National Walk to Work Day.

However, when it comes to walking for leisure, Oxford lags behind other areas in the county with just 61.2 per cent doing so monthly compared with 67.4 per cent in South Oxfordshire.

Councillor Louise Upton, the city council's executive board member for Healthy Oxford, is calling on Oxford residents to match their walk to work with a ‘walk to play’.

Ms Upton said: "With so many wonderful parks across the city, it’s easy to enjoy the great outdoors right here in Oxford – and I’d encourage everyone to do so."
