THE Business Secretary is to chair a meeting of a task force set up to try to save Honda's UK car plant from closing.

Greg Clark said the meeting in Swindon on Thursday was part of an attempt to persuade the Japanese firm to reverse its decision.

The planned closure in 2021 will cost 3,500 direct jobs and thousands more in firms that supply the factory with parts and services.

Mr Clark said: "Honda's exceptional workforce have been a crucial factor in securing Swindon's reputation for manufacturing excellence, and our task force is dedicated to ensuring this continues to be recognised both here and abroad.

"Our meeting is part of the extensive ongoing work that brings together the Government, associates, the trade unions, suppliers, Swindon Council, local MPs and the whole local community in making a compelling case that shows with evidence that this decision should be reversed."

Unite organised a march through Swindon last weekend in support of the factory.
