POLICE have lifted a cordon in a village near Bicester after safely removing two unexploded bombs.

Both devices have been safely removed and all police units have now left the scene.

The local school, Heyford Park Free School, was not evacuated, but the public were being urged to avoid the Upper Heyford area earlier.

The Explosive Ordance Disposal team arrived at a building site on the former RAF Upper Heyford earlier today, with Camp Road cordoned off.

The area has now reopened and police say there is 'no danger' to the public.

Oxford Mail:

One device was safely disposed of yesterday, before a second bomb was discovered.

Thames Travel said last night that Camp Road had been closed, with witnesses suggesting a bomb disposal unit was on the scene.

Oxford Mail:

In a statement earlier this morning, police explained: "Officers from Thames Valley Police are currently in Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, following reports of historic ordnance being located. Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit are currently attending to assess the device."

The statement continued: "A cordon is currently in place around the area and a road closure is in place in Camp Road. There is no impact on the local primary school which is open as usual. Members of the public are, however, advised to avoid the immediate area until further notice.

"A further device was located at the same site yesterday at around 3.50pm and was disposed of safely by the EOD."

Oxford Mail:

They later added: "The device has been removed, and all units have left scene."

Last night a caller told the Oxford Mail that an "unexploded mortar bomb has been discovered and it has closed off most of Upper Heyford."

The site of RAF Upper Heyford, which was in use from 1918 - 1994, used to be home to the US air force.
