THE Westgate Social is being 'reviewed' after more complaints from businesses that shoppers 'don't know they exist'.

Managers spoke out again after another business at the underground food hall – posh chippy Salt 'n' Sauce – closed for good.

Now, Westgate bosses have admitted that the Social has 'not been the success' that they hoped, and will review it.

It came months after Indian-inspired restaurant Rola Wala packed up and left the Social, which is downstairs at the £440m shopping centre.

Alejandra Tovar, the manager of Ned's Noodles said: "Not many people know this place exists.

"It's the location: from the outside, when you look in you can't see anything, it looks so dark.

"It looks private."

Rafal, assistant manager of the Social's Lebanese grill Shawa agreed, saying: "Nothing has really changed, it's hidden.

"Upstairs sometimes you can barely walk it's so crowed, but the bottom floor isn't like that.

"We have good days and bad days: After 12pm until about 3pm-4pm we have people and there is a steady flow, but from 4ish until about 6pm it’s dead.

"In the evening it will be a lottery draw. Sometimes there is a flow, sometimes it's dead – there is just no guessing."

He added: "I'm not scared about the quality of food we serve.

"The problem is still that a lot of people just do not know we are here."

Outside the Westgate Social

It is the second time businesses have hit out at the Social, saying there is a poor footfall.

They first voiced concerns in July, when stall managers collectively said there was a lack of advertisement, poor lighting and high rents.

Weeks after that, the owners of the Westgate put more comfortable seating outside and asked Oxford City Council for the green light to put more signs up which would direct shoppers downstairs.

But now a spokeswoman for the centre has said the Social could be about to get a revamp.

She said: “Westgate Social has not delivered the success for all of our street food partners that we had hoped it would.

"We’re committed to providing outstanding experiences for our guests and are currently reviewing plans for Westgate Social going forwards”.

Salt 'n' Sauce have closed for good

Alex Hunter, founder of Salt 'N' Sauce put the reason to leaving down to expectations.

He said: "It wasn't what we hoped it would be – there are lessons to be learnt by everyone.

"The market wasn't quite what we or the developer expected it to be.

"We put a lot of work and money in but ultimately our brand didn't fit there. We were selling high-quality premium fast food and we didn't feel the market were bothered about that kind of food and were willing to pay any more.

"It was always going to be an uphill battle."

The closure comes after Rola Wala closed its doors in the social for good in July.

He added: "In their defence, this does happen with new shopping centres, and expectations change."

In July Oxford Mail readers responded to a survey to say they often found the Social empty, despite high footfall figures reported at the Westgate more generally.
