NINE months after an Oxford hotel was slammed by inspectors over its 'greasy' kitchen equipment and poor staff training the business has failed to improve on its low food hygiene rating.

The Victoria Hotel in Abingdon Road, which has also been described by guests as ‘very dated’ and ‘tired’, was given a one-star rating, the second lowest possible score and which means ‘major improvement necessary’, when the Oxford City Council team visited on July 26 last year.

A catalogue of issues were highlighted during this inspection to do with a lack of evidence the hotel was following legally required food hygiene procedures.

The report stated: “There is a poor knowledge of food hygiene. Staff must complete Level Two food hygiene training. This can be done online.

“Daily checks had not been recorded since March. These checks must be completed daily.”

As of March 26 the business is still listed as having a one-star rating.

In November, business consultants Christie & Co began marketing the hotel, which is set within almost half an acre of land, as a ‘family-run guest house’ with 16 en-suite rooms, spread over two floors.

Despite the damning findings of health inspectors reviews are more mixed for the city hotel on TripAdvisor.

One recent guest wrote: "The rooms are very clean, fresh bedding, towels and clean bathroom, tea/coffee making facilities included.

"The hotel could benefit from a re-furb of sorts, new taps, shower and fittings etc, but is clean and comfortable."

Others have had a less positive stay describing the hotel as 'very tired' and 'dated', with the most recent review, posted last month, stating: "This is with out doubt the worst hotel ever!

"The staff were very rude and unhelpful. The room we were given was filthy, damp and very cold."

The hotel is currently listed as 'under offer' on the Christie & Co website with a guide price of £2.5 million but is still taking bookings via current website victoriaoxford.co.uk.
