THOUSANDS from Oxfordshire descended on London this afternoon for an anti-Brexit demonstration.

The 'Put it to the People' march saw protestors line the streets of the capital calling for a second referendum on Britain's membership of the EU.

It comes after a petition to revoke Article 50 – the trigger for Britain leaving the EU – was signed by thousands of voters in the county, and has been signed by more than 4 million people nationwide.

Oxford East MP for Labour Anneliese Dodds called the event a 'historic' march and tweeted her support for the rally.

Oxford West and Abingdon MP for the Liberal Democrats Layla Moran also tweeted her support from the march.

Among the thousands of protestors that headed from Oxfordshire to London was councillor and Liberal Democrat Roz Smith.

Speaking to Oxford Mail she said: "The whole issue of Brexit has been handled so poorly and 17 and a half million people were lied to.

"Those lies are coming home to roost and I think we need to revoke Article 50 and carry out a People's Vote.

"The realities are coming home to roost that Brexit is going to be so damaging to the country.

"We are stronger in Europe."

Last October, more than 700,000 people marched through central London to demand a People’s Vote on Brexit at a similar protest.

This  event began at Park Lane, London from midday and saw people march to Parliament Square for a mass rally and speeches.

Some estimates for the attendance on the day put the figure as high as one million demonstrators.

Ahead of the march, Oxford for Europe said it had three fully booked coaches, and a fourth being organized by an allied campaign, ready for the march.

Other coaches set off from Burford, Banbury and Didcot.

More than 8,000 leaflets had been delivered in the Oxford area to promote the march and more than 100 campaigners from Didcot, Wallingford and Wantage area also pledged to join the march.

Anne-Marie Simpson, Peoples Vote Coordinator for the Wantage and Didcot constituency, said: “Brexit is already causing deep damage to Britain, threatening local jobs, businesses, the NHS and living standards in South Oxfordshire.

“The Put It To The People march may very well be our last chance to demand a democratic final say on this mess, before it’s too late. This is High Noon for Brexit.

“Anyone who cares about the future, anyone who feels betrayed by broken promises in the last referendum, anyone who wants to prevent years more of this madness is welcome to join us to make their voice heard. It’s now or never.”

Pro-leave campaigners, meanwhile, say Britain has already had a 'People's Vote' and the result of the 2016 referendum should be respected.
