THE new manager of the Wyvern Theatre has quit the job after just two months in the role.

Robert Miles became the theatre’s director in January but decided to leave after only a handful of weeks in charge.

The Adver learned of his departure after trying to organise an interview to talk about his aims and ambitions for the future of the theatre and his previous managerial experience, only to be told by staff that he no longer worked there and had left last week.

A spokeswoman for the Wyvern Theatre said: “After two months in the post, Robert felt that the role was not right for him and therefore he decided to move on. Robert thanked everyone for their support while he was in the role and we all wish him well.

“Recruitment for Robert’s replacement will commence shortly but we don’t have anyone lined up at the moment.”

In the meantime, Elly Stimpson-Duffy has stepped into the role of theatre manager. The Wyvern Theatre’s previous director Derek Aldridge oversaw operations at the theatre for almost a decade, helping it celebrate its 40th anniversary and undergo £200,000 of renovations.

Mr Aldridge left the role in 2019.

Before his first day at the Wyvern, Mr Miles tweeted: “Watch out Swindon Wyvern Theatre and HQ Theatres here I come, and I’m rolling my sleeves up...”

The Adver approached Mr Miles for comment but he did not reply before deadline.

UPDATE: After this piece was published, Mr Miles replied: "The difficult decision to leave my post at Swindon theatres was made for personal reasons."
