READERS have backed a plan to build new roads in Oxfordshire after it was given a significant funding boost.

In an online poll on the Oxford Mail website 58 per cent of people said they supported four new roads projects in and around Didcot, agreeing that the current road network can't cope with the number of homes being built.

In total 78 per cent of people backed the proposals but 20 per cent said the county needs more than those being put forward.

In the Spring Statement on Wednesday, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced Oxfordshire County Council's £218million bid from the Housing Infrastructure Fund had been successful.

The money will go towards widening the A4130 from Milton Interchange towards Didcot, a new Science Bridge over the A4130, a new Culham to Didcot river crossing between the A4130 and A415 and a Clifton Hampden bypass.

The schemes will come with bicycle and walking options but 12 per cent of readers said the roads shouldn't be built because they will encourage more people to travel by car.

A further 11 per cent of those who voted said they didn't want the roads as they would ruin important rural parts of the county.

MP for the area Ed Vaizey said the funding would help revitalise the area and support housing growth.

He added: "A further new river crossing between Didcot and Culham will not only help residents of Didcot but relive pressure on the bridge at Sutton Courtenay. Finally a bypass at Clifton Hamden will be a major asset to the area."
