The National Union of Teachers organised a huge march and rally of almost 1,000 parents, teachers and children through Oxford to the steps of County Hall in July 1977.

Officials of Oxfordshire County Council were due to meet the Education Secretary, Shirley Williams, to try and settle a teacher dispute.

Teachers wanted the council's education cuts to be revoked and created a petition which had 21,000 signatures.

At the end of the march , the general secretary of the NUT, Mr Fred Jarvis, praised the Oxford organisers of its protest campaign - the petitioning alone had been done in four days.

Nearly 400 members of the NUT took part in an eight-day strike.
