A DRUG dealer from East Oxford has been jailed for five years.

A jury found Devon Nelson, of Cowley Road, guilty by unanimous verdict after a four-day trial last week.

The 54-year-old was first stopped on Cowley Road on September 13.

Police raided his home and found large quantities of Class A and Class B drugs which they seized along with a large quantity of cash.

He was charged the very next day, September 14.

At the end of last week’s trial the jury found him guilty of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and possession of a Class B.

He was sentenced at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to five years in prison.

Case investigator Steve Nicklin, based at Oxford police station said: “Tackling drug dealing is a top priority for Thames Valley Police.

“I believe this sentence shows that we will not tolerate this criminal activity, and we will continue to work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice."

He added: “I would urge anybody who has any information about drug dealing in their area to make a report online or contact police on the non-emergency number 101.

“Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Last year police launched a new crackdown on drugs across Oxford in a bid to clean up the city’s streets and help users into recovery.

The new drugs taskforce saw Thames Valley Police, Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council working together since mid-August to tackle the scourge of drug dealing.

The taskforce was set up in response to residents’ concerns about the visibility of drug crime in public spaces, with the number of discarded needles found on the streets going up by more than 15 per cent in a year.
