STARK warnings about BMW's future in Oxford has sent shockwaves across the city.

Oxford East MP Anneliese Dodds said the news would be 'really difficult' for people in her constituency to hear but pledged to fight 'tooth and nail' to keep the plant open.

It comes after senior figures at BMW said yesterday they are looking at the possibility of moving 'some or all' production to Holland.

She added: “I’ve repeatedly raised concerns about the impact of a ‘no deal’ Brexit and uncertainty over customs in particular, with Government ministers and even with the Prime Minister.

“They really must now listen to what companies like BMW are telling them. We must keep those jobs in our city, where the Cowley plant has been enormously important for over sixty years.”

Oxford West and Abingdon MP, Layla Moran, said she was 'angry' BMW had been put in this position.

She added: “The fact they are even considering moving the production of Mini out of Oxford is exactly why a no-deal Brexit would be catastrophic for jobs.

"The Tories have the opportunity to take no-deal off the table, and I call on them to do so now, they must give assurance to the residents of Oxford.”

Theresa May's official spokesman said the Prime Minister believes the best way to deliver the certainty which car companies want is for MPs to approve her Withdrawal Agreement in the 'meaningful vote' due to take place by March 12.

The spokesman said: "The PM fully understands that businesses need more certainty and for us to secure a deal which allows us to protect those just-in-time supply chains and deliver frictionless trade.

"That's why we are working hard to secure the changes which MPs need in order to be able to support the meaningful vote.

"Only by passing the meaningful vote will we be able to deliver that certainty."
