SPENDING more time in the sun could help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, according to Oxford researchers.

The new study found exposure to bright sunlight could improve glucose and fat metabolism.

Higher insulin levels are one of the first signs of type 2 diabetes whereas higher triglyceride levels can indicate the start of atherosclerosis, a condition where fatty deposits accumulate inside the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Working with colleagues in the Netherlands, the scientists analysed data from local weather stations in both Oxfordshire and Leiden, Holland, coupled with blood and body fat measurements from over 10,000 middle-aged people.

The team said further research was needed but could not rule out the possibility that the effects could be as a result of people being more likely to lead a healthier outdoor lifestyle in nicer weather.
