THE owner of the Covered Market's famous cheese shop has raised alarm about dust getting on his cheeses during a £36m building project.

Work started this weekend on the Jesus College revamp of Northgate House on the corner of Cornmarket Street and Market Street.Oxford Mail:

Robert Pouget, who owns The Oxford Cheese Company at the Market Street entrance of the Covered Market, fears dust could get on his produce when major demolition work starts.

He added: “We are pretty concerned about the fact they are demolishing this building - it it a lot of concrete coming down.

"There are retail units in the street and in the Covered Market and we are worried about the dust and the noise, and how that is going to affect already difficult times with retail sales.”

City council spokesman Tom Jennings said: “We’re keeping the Covered Market traders informed.

"Colleagues visited every trader available at the end last week.

"The Covered Market Tenants' Association will also be represented in the regular stakeholders meeting."

The Jesus College scheme will bring new shops, student accommodation and facilities and work is expected to take two years to complete.
