WORK to expand the Emergency Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital could soon get underway with an event this week aimed at appointing contractors for the scheme.

In November Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was given the green light to expand the A&E department by Oxford City Council.

The A&E rooms at the JR and Horton saw a 6 per cent increase on the number patients in January compared to the same time last year.

Construction firm McLaughlin & Harvey will be holding the event to allow contractors the chance to meet face-to-face with key members of the project team and to discuss the upcoming work.

The work, which goes under the name the Resus Redevelopment, will include more space for ambulances to drop patients off, as well as a paediatric resuscitation room, nurses' bay and improved bereavement and relatives' rooms.

The project, which will also include refurbishment of the current Emergency Department will be carried out in different phases and is hoped to be completed by spring 2020.

The information evening will take place from 1000 to 1300 on Wednesday 6 March at Kassam Stadium, Oxford Tickets are free, and everyone is welcome to attend.
