DETAILED plans for a huge new estate in North Abingdon have been revealed to residents for the first time.

The 425 houses are the first phase of a 900-home scheme granted outline approval for land off Dunmore Road in 2017 by developer CEG.

David Wilson Homes and Barratt will build the new properties, which will be a mix of one, two, three, four and five bedroom properties.

Oxford Mail:

There will be two access roads onto the estate from Dunmore Road, as well as new pedestrian and cycle pathways, and green spaces including a park.

Traffic concerns were top of many people's thoughts at a public exhibition held at the Northcourt Centre on Thursday, which was attended by 183 people.

Martin and Janet Buckland, who have lived south of the planned site at West Avenue for 43 years said they thought the development would be 'horrendous' for Dunmore Road.

Oxford Mail:

Mrs Buckland said: "It already takes 10 minutes to get onto Dunmore Road from our side in the mornings, if you add all the people trying to get off this new estate it's going to be even worse."

Her husband added: "It's not just about the level of houses but how it has done been. It doesn't seem as if anyone has listened since the outline approval.

"There are only two access points from the new houses which is going to be very congested."

The scheme was not without support, however, with husband and wife Carol and Adrian Thorn saying the houses, 35 per cent of which will be affordable housing, would fulfil an important need for the town.

Mrs Thorn, 59, said: "Both of our children have moved away because they couldn't find houses nearby. There was a couple when we came in who were desperate for one of the houses and wanted to know when they would be available."

Facilities featured in the outline application, including a new primary school, shops and community hub are not part of these proposals and will be delivered separately.

A spokesperson from David Wilson Homes said: “We are pleased with the number of people who have attended the exhibition and have spoken to us about our plans to deliver the first three phases of the North Abingdon-on-Thames development with Barratt Homes.

“We have received valuable feedback from local residents that we help us to shape our final proposals ahead of submitting a detailed planning application to the Vale of White Horse District Council for their consideration.”

A formal planning application is expected to go in next month, with work beginning towards the end of the year, providing the plans are approved by the district council.
