DUNELM Mill in Oxford has asked the government to intervene after the city council refused permission for it to have new illuminated signs.

The home furnishing shop's managers asked the council last year for permission to put up six new green light-up signs with the Dunelm Mill logo at their site off Botley Road.

The council, however, refused.

Officers said the the signs would be an 'incongruous and visually cluttered fixture on the building' and would also create 'unacceptable light pollution' for neighbours in the area.

In its written decision to the company, the council said: "The proposed fascia signs, by reason of the number, scale and size of internally illuminated signs proposed would result in unnecessary and unacceptable levels of light pollution and spillage, which would have an unacceptable impact on the residential amenity of neighbouring dwellings in Brock Grove.

"For these reasons the proposed signage is harmful to the residential amenity of the surrounding area."

The company has now launched an appeal against the decision to the Secretary of State which will be decided in due course.
