A NEW electric vehicle charging point could soon be opened at an Oxford electricity substation.

Pivot Power has raised the idea in a planning application to create a new 49.9MW battery storage facility at Cowley Substation on Blackberry Lane near Sandford.

The firm said it could help Oxford reach its low-emissions targets.

In its submission to South Oxfordshire District Council, Pivot wrote: "In addition to providing a frequency response service, the programme of installed batteries will provide significant opportunities for local authorities to plan and implement their electric vehicle (EV) strategies and assist in improving air quality.

"Each Pivot Power battery will provide the opportunity for ancillary EV charging locations to be established, including rapid charging facilities on major roads and standard charging facilities in established urban areas, including employment areas, park and ride facilities and retail parks etc.

"The batteries also provide resilience on local grid networks, which increase certainty of supply to existing homes and businesses, including those installing electric vehicle charging infrastructure."
