INTERNATIONAL superstars The Feeling have been tipped to headline a new super festival in South Oxfordshire this summer.

The BRIT Award winners are rumoured to be the top billing at the biggest ever Rugfest in Wallingford, which returns in June with a twist.

This year's festival is also going to revive and join forces with the town's sorely-missed Blues and Beer Festival, which will now run as a new Friday night offering on the June 21 weekend.

Lead Rugfest organiser Guy Hewitt, of Wallingford Rugby Club, would not confirm line-up rumours but said he had a feeling the bands playing would all be ‘superb’.

He explained: “Last year was brilliant and this year we thought ‘why not do it for the whole weekend?'

Herald Series:

“All the usual stuff will be happening again and it’s just going to be another brilliant year. It’s about love, music and having a great time – that’s what it’s all about.”

Headliners are set to be play at 6pm on Saturday, in an effort to allow families a chance to watch big live performances together.

Having become a favourite in the town calender for eight years, the festival had to be put on hold in 2016 when the rugby club could not hold the event with building work ongoing.

But it returned in style in 2018, headlined by another massive name in British rock Scouting For Girls in glorious weather.

Mr Hewitt continued: “The other thing that is special this year is that our mates at Blues and Beer are coming – they have got some amazing bands lined up.

“Wallingford has a really good tradition for music, we just weren’t going to let Blues and Beer go without a fight.”

Geoff Goddard, the chairman of Blues and Beer, has confirmed that a 7pm–midnight music offering will feature the ‘fantastic’ Climate Blues Band.

He thanked Rugfest for offering to make Friday ‘Blues and Beer Night’ and said: “It’s a great idea and a great venue.

Herald Series:

“We have been around for 26 years and this seems to be the best opportunity to bring it back.

“It will be a great relaunch for us.”

The long-running festival was cancelled in 2017 following safety fears over faulty fire doors at Wallingford's Regal Centre.

Mr Goddard’s ‘2020 vision’ is that this summer’s comeback will be followed by a fuller return next year.

Wallingford Mayor Lee Upcraft welcomed the news, declaring himself ‘really pleased’ at the ‘great combination’.

He said: “The festival has been sorely missed since the council was forced to close the Regal at short notice, and I’m really pleased that they’ve been able to team up with Rugfest to support each other.

“It means that there’s now a much-expanded programme of music to enjoy spread over more nights – there’s a great opportunity here for people to come and stay in the area for a couple of days and sample a wider range of music than they might otherwise.”

He added that the town council was working to provide a new Regal Centre, which he hoped would be used for festivals in future.
