MORE drivers have been caught using a notorious illegal cut-through in Oxford.

Police and council licensing officers were out last night and stopped 19 vehicles for using Turl Street.

It's the second time this month that officers have revealed a surprise night-time operation to crack down on people using the 'access only' road as a through road.

Earlier in February, 17 drivers were given tickets and dozens more warned for attempting to enter the street.

And in last night's crackdown, 19 people were given a £50 fine. These included three taxis and a food delivery vehicle.

Turl Street runs between Broad Street and High Street.

Between 10am and 6pm, only delivery vehicles less than 5m long are allowed.

Larger delivery vehicles are permitted outside of these hours when they are allowed to exit via Cornmarket.

There is a rising bollard on Turl Street, where the road meets Market Street.

But reports suggest this has not been working for some time.

Oxford Mail:

One Twitter user replied to Thames Valley Police to say: "Thank you for doing this.

"Pretty sure that getting the rising bollards to work would be a more efficient use of resources, and would free you up to deal with more pressing matters, but until that happens, this is appreciated."
