A NEW burger restaurant that was voted one of the top in the country is set to open in York.

Burgsy’s burger house, that has been a fan favourite for Whitby residents and visitors over the years, will be moving to Castlegate in early April.

The American-themed burger bar, which prides itself on its local quality meat and homemade sauces, was voted by Tripadvisor last year as the second best in the UK for the humble hamburger.

The company is run by Marta Gemra, 33, and her husband Patryk, 34, who first started flipping burgers on an industrial site in Whitby in 2014.

Mrs Gemra said that they became a popular destination for joiners and builders who worked near the site. Before long people from all over Whitby were coming for their burgers.

They subsequently opened Burgsy’s in 2015, and for the last three years they have been running a successful restaurant in the resort and the couple have now decided to take the next step by moving to a city.

Ms Gemra said: “We have had a wonderful three years running the restaurant here but the premises only houses 18 seats and we wanted to expand.

“Whitby is brilliant for custom in the summer and we are extremely grateful for the time we have spent here, but we felt that we needed to work in a city if we were to move forward.

“We have visited York many times together and fell in love with the city, and think we have found the ideal spot.

“Many people came from York to eat our burgers in Whitby so we knew there was a market here.”

They intend to sign the lease by the start of March and hope to open the restaurant in April.

The couple also added that they will be looking to employ up to six people to help run the restaurant.

Ms Gemra said: “Myself and Patryk spend most our time in the kitchen and we are hoping to expand our menu, adding in some more starters and a full bar, so we will need front of house and kitchen staff.”
