THE driver in a crash which killed an Abingdon motorcyclist could face criminal charges, an Oxford coroner has said.

Billy Elbrow, 20, died after a ‘massive chest trauma’ on August 23, 2018, following a collision between his white Kawasaki bike and a silver Volkswagen Passat at Milton Interchange.

Shop assistant Mr Elbrow was taken to A&E at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where blood transfusions and resuscitation attempts failed to save him, Oxford Coroner’s Court was told today.

In a procedural pre-inquest review, Oxfordshire coroner Darren Salter said full inquest proceedings had been delayed by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) which is considering whether to press charges against the driver.

Mr Salter said: “The case is still with the CPS. Consideration of criminal charges is still ongoing.

“A decision is likely within a few weeks on whether it will be a criminal trial. If there is a trial, it is very unlikely that there will be an inquest.”

The inquest, which was opened on September 5, was scheduled to be conducted yesterday.

Labelling it a ‘sad case’, Mr Salter added: “Just through the traffic lights [at the busy interchange between Didcot and Abingdon] Mr Elbrow sustained serious injuries.”

Floral tributes were left at the scene and family and friends have paid touching tribute to the young motorcyclist.

His parents called him ‘a happy-go-lucky chap who loved and lived life to the full’.

In a tribute, the school continued: “[He was] a bright light, with good, strong family values, a sense of right and wrong, a big heart and determination.”
