MORE workers in Oxford would quit their jobs than switch to public transport, according to a new poll.
An AA survey into the effects of introducing workplace parking levy found that in the 'Oxford region', 56 per cent of members who work in a city or major town drive and park for free at their workplace.
On hold? Oxford parking levy could force businesses to pay to fund transport improvements
Faced with a levy of £400 or more per year:
• 47 per cent said they would continue to drive in because there is no suitable travel alternative
• 22 per cent would continue to drive in because it is the fastest way to and from work
• Nine per cent said they would probably have to change their job
• Seven per cent would drive part of the way and walk, cycle or park and ride
• Only four per cent would stop driving and use public transport
The AA has warned of a 'poll tax on wheels' as the number of existing or potential schemes more than doubled from the summer’s five (Nottingham, Bristol, Oxford, Cambridge and Reading) to 11 (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hounslow, Merton, Brent and Camden).
