PETER Rawcliffe of Oxford Flood Alliance is wrong to suggest that 'you need a team of people with great expertise, using computer modelling' to assess the feasibility Jonathan Madden’s pipeline scheme.

Pipeline technology is highly developed, and water flowing through pressurised pipes is simple hydraulic engineering, predictable without computer models.

Greater flow can be achieved than water flowing by gravity in an open channel, meaning Oxford would gain better flood protection.

The proposal meets all of the OFAS objectives with none of its drawbacks, and needs to be carefully considered by everyone. The fact that an elegant solution such as this was never even considered by the Environment Agency says a lot about their approach.

It is not up to Jonathan to deliver a flood scheme for Oxford, this is the EA’s job; but it needs to be a cost-effective scheme that works without unacceptable traffic disruption and long term environmental damage.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Rod Chalk,

North Hinksey
