A PEDESTRIAN suffered facial injuries as he was struck by a car in East Oxford’s busy Cowley Road.

More details have emerged today about a collision on Saturday night, which prompted the road’s closure and a huge response from emergency services.

Eyewitnesses recalled how they saw an ‘out of control’ Range Rover plough into parked vehicles before halting at the junction with East Avenue, with several saying there was ‘no driver’ in the car and that a child was in the passenger seat.

Another witness, however, claimed it was the Range Rover that was hit and the driver then ‘fell out’ into the road.

Oxford Mail:

Thames Valley Police has refused to comment, other than to confirm that no-one died, but South Central Ambulance Service has now confirmed that a man in his 50s was hit.

Spokesman David Gallagher said: “We received a 999 call at 8.39pm, with the caller reporting a collision between a car and a pedestrian outside Subway on Cowley Road.

“The caller informed us the patient was conscious and breathing and had sustained facial and hand injuries.

“We sent a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and a paramedic team leader to the incident.

“The patient was an approximately 50-year-old male and after initial treatment at the scene he was then taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital.”

The make of the car involved was not stated.

One man who was walking along Cowley Road at the time, who asked not to be named said: "There was a man in the middle of the road being treated by paramedics.

"He was wrapped in foil and paramedics were just bringing the stretcher out to take him away.

"He seemed to be conscious so hopefully he is okay."

Officers at the scene were seen guarding a Range Rover, which appeared to have crashed into the pavement opposite Sundaes Gelato.

Oxford Mail:

One witness told the Oxford Mail the Range Rover was 'crazy and out of control, with no driver in it'.

Yesterday another witness also claimed to have seen the Range Rover smash into two parked cars before coming to a stop, adding: “No one was in the driver’s seat, just a child in the passenger side."

Writing on Twitter, Jordan Burns said the driver was also injured in the crash, although SCAS did not mention treating a second patient.

He said: “I was there. The Range Rover was hit, the driver fell out and it was rolling with a child inside, hit a bollard, a [Ford] focus and a wall.

“This a 2 and a half ton car. the driver was on the floor and had to go to hospital.”

Crowds of people exiting The Vaccines gig at the O2 Academy in Cowley Road, at about 9.45pm, were directed away from the incident by security personnel and police.

Motorists were also diverted from the scene and a road closure was initially in place between The Plain roundabout and East Avenue, which was then brought back to Bullingdon Road before being completely lifted later in the evening.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said the force did not comment on road traffic collisions and that it does not plan to issue a witness appeal.
