WALLINGFORD marked their 125th anniversary by re-running the club’s first recorded match.

More than 150 people watched a 1-1 draw between Wallingford Ladies’ 2nd and Oxford University 3rd, which was the highlight of their Vice Presidents Day.

It had echoes of the club’s debut in 1894, which was against Oxford alumni.

Sarah Lye put the hosts in front, but the students levelled in the Trysports Three Counties League Division 1 encounter with five minutes to go through Hannah McLintock.

Vice chairperson Mike Latham said: “It was a truly memorable day.

“There was some brilliant hockey on show and the race night was a lot of fun.

“It was fantastic to see the club packed full of members past and present and it was a great way to start our anniversary celebrations. “Thank you to everyone who made the day so special.”

The big crowd could not inspire Wallingford’s men, who lost 3-0 against Maidenhead to stay bottom of MBBO Regional Division 1.

Oxford OBU also tasted defeat, going down 5-1 at OMT.

Will Heywood netted the visitors’ consolation.

But Witney fared better, climbing to fifth place after beating Reading 3rd 3-0 for the second time this season.

Ryan Fitz-John laid on the opening goal for Ben Moss, who finished off a slick move to double the lead before half-time.

Witney stayed on top in the second half and sealed victory with a goal from debutant Sam Topping, who converted a cross from man of the match Fraser Barnard.
