NINE women were recognised with Gold Awards for their Duke of Edinburgh efforts at the Lord Mayor's Parlour in May 1965.
Carol Allpress, Valerie Brain, Joy Bushnell, Lilian Charlett, Gillian Douglas, Susan Smith, Sheila Townsend, June Wheeler and Margaret Young all received the honour.
Policewoman Gillian Douglas, from Headington, 'saluted smartly' when she stepped forward to receive the award from Lord Mayor Ald. J. N. L. Baker, Oxford Mail readers were told.
She partly earned her award after she learned Braille to help blind victims of crime.
