AN OAK tree thought to be up to 1,000 years old has been significantly damaged in a fire.

Fire crews were called to Wheatley Park School yesterday evening upon receiving reports that the ancient tree was 'fully alight'.

The campus landmark, which features on the logo of the school, was planted in Anglo Saxon times.

Oxford Mail:

It is not currently known what caused it to catch fire.

When firefighters from Wheatley Fire Station arrived on the scene, the fire was spreading throughout the hollow branches.

They used high pressure hosereels to bring the flames under control before using the school's moat to access more water and put the fire out.

Oxford Mail:

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue said in a Facebook update: "Thankfully despite enduring great damages the magnificent tree is still standing."
