A CONVICTED robber has had his six-year jail term extended after he was caught with a mobile phone hidden in a shoe while checking in to HMP Bullingdon on his first day at the prison.

Convict Daryl Childs was handed the initial jail sentence in March 2017 for the single count of robbery and had entered the reception area of the prison near Bicester on August 21 having been transferred there.

On being searched by prison staff officers found a mobile phone complete with a working SIM card stashed inside a trainer.

Just four days later while settling in to the prison the 20-year-old was caught again, this time in his cell, having hidden another mobile phone which was found inside a deodorant bottle.

This phone did not have a SIM card but was found with a working charger.

Childs admitted two counts of having an unauthorised item while in prison at Oxford Crown Court and was sentenced on Friday.

In mitigation at the hearing, defence barrister Alan Goh said that his client had only used the first mobile phone to make calls to his friends and families.

He added that Childs had acted as a ‘custodian’ of the second phone, and it was handed to him to look after in return for his usage of the device.

Sentencing, Judge Ian Pringle QC said that having a phone in prison made it inevitable that his current jail term had to be extended.

He said: “People ought to be aware, if they aren’t already aware, that those who are in possession of mobile telephones in prison will firstly be found out, because the prisons now have equipment which can detect the use of such phones very easily.

“And when they are found out it will simply add to the sentence they are currently serving.”

For both counts Childs was jailed for six months to run concurrently with each other, and consecutive to his current sentence of six years. He must also pay a victim surcharge.
