RESIDENTS have just a few hours to have their say on major plans to upgrade the A40.

Oxfordshire County Council is proposing a £180m overhaul of the road between Witney and Oxford, including an Eynsham park-and-ride and an eastbound bus lane between Eynsham and the Duke's Cut canal bridge, near Wolvercote.

A consultation period has been open since November 30, but will close at 11.59pm tonight.

It is hoped the upgrades will ease congestion on the busy stretch, which is used by up to 32,000 cars every day.

The project will be largely funded through the Local Growth Fund, with £35m already provisionally secured, and will be split into two phases.

The first phase includes the park-and-ride, which would be located north of the A40, west of Cuckoo Lane, Eynsham, to the north west of the village.

It also features the new bus lane, bus stops on the A40, westbound bus priority and junction improvements at certain points of the stretch.

Construction is scheduled to start this year if funds are approved, with the council aiming to complete the work by April 2021.

Phase two consists of five further elements, including extending the dual carriageway at Witney to the new park-and-ride.

The county council held four public consultations in West Oxfordshire last month and residents shared their views.

Many revealed they were left unconvinced the major works would significantly ease traffic on the busy stretch, with commuters already regularly facing delays of 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, Oxfordshire Futures, a working group of the Oxford Civic Society, last month said the park-and-ride should be built east of Witney, instead of Eynsham.
