A RUGBY club has paid tribute to 'stalwart and legend' John Deeley who has passed away.

Bicester Rugby Union Football Club announced the passing of Mr Deeley, of Chesterton near Bicester, last week.

It comes after Mr Deeley played a huge role in the club as president for more than 20 years.

The club said: "He was a stalwart and legend of the Club and a great friend to so many in the BRUFC Community and beyond.

"Words cannot begin to express how much he was appreciated and will be missed.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all of John's family and friends at this time."

Mr Deeley, a farmer and keen sportsman, was very much a big part of the community in Bicester having lived in the nearby village for many decades.

He had strong links to many sporting clubs primarily BRUFC, and formerly as Middleton Stoney Cricket Club chairman in previous years.

But Mr Deeley was also the founder of Wooden Spoon Oxfordshire, the children's charity of rugby, for more than 12 years.

The father-of-one was at the helm of raising more than £160,000 for local causes through various community events including an annual golf days and dinners, with support of sporting legends including rugby commentator Ian Robertson, rower Tim Foster and England Sevens player Rob Vickerman.

The money has supported charities and groups including, ROSY, Bardwell School, Helen and Douglas House Hospice and many more individuals.
