JOSH Ruffels admitted the entire Oxford United team got the hairdryer treatment at half-time – but it had nothing to do with their performance.

An own goal from Ollie Turton and another strike from James Henry gave the hosts a 2-0 lead against Blackpool.

But much of the focus at half-time was on getting warmed up, due to the freezing conditions.

It saw the squad use every available option to thaw out, including the hairdryers in the changing room.

Ruffels said: “We had them on, hot water bottles, towels and a change of kit.

“It’s so hard playing in those conditions, it’s so cold.

“Coming in at half-time we had to strip off to try to warm ourselves back up again before we went out there.”

But the defender felt part of the reason United won the game was in the way they handled – and ignored– the elements.

He said: “I think mentally you’ve just got to be in the right frame of mind and not think about it too much.

“If you let it take over then you’re not going to play well.”

Blackpool boss Terry McPhillips concurred.

He said: “Conditions were atrocious and we weren’t at our best.

“We didn’t stick it on them as much as I would have liked in the second half.

“We didn’t play the conditions well enough when we had the advantage.”

He added: “It’s disappointing to lose the game and not score. To cap it all off the showers were cold.”
