A PETITION to ban glasses in bars and pubs across Blackburn and Darwen has reached more than 10,000 signatures.

The 'Trash the Glass' campaign was launched in the wake of the murder of Jason 'Jay Jay' Taylor, who died after having a champagne flute thrust into his neck at the former Esco-Bar in Darwen in January.

The campaign wants to ban the use of glass from 10pm in bars and pubs and be replaced with plastic glasses.

Just short of 11-months after the 23-year-old's death, the campaign's wheels are turning and Natalie Yates, the petition's creator, will hand it to Darwen's MP, Jake Berry and ask for it to be discussed in parliament.

Mrs Yates, from Mellor, said she was shocked to see how much support has been given to her best friend, Vicky Taylor, Jay Jay's mum, and the rest of their family.

She said: "Now we've got 10,000 we are going to make an appointment with Jake and ask him to deliver the petition to parliament.

"We need to fight for this to help prevent further tragedies from happening in the future.

"I made the campaign the night after he died after thinking about why it happened and how it happened.

"If there's not any glass around and plastic ones are used then less damage would be caused if something broke out."

Mrs Yates also said she's wanting all pubs to introduce CCTV so any vital evidence found for incidents can be used if it went to court.

Jack James Costello was told he will serve a minimum of 19 years before he is eligible for parole when he was sentenced in August.

A jury took six and a half hours to find the 45-year-old, of Victoria Street in Rishton, guilty of murder by a majority of 10 to two.
