A HOME owner had a lucky escape after a fire ripped through an upstairs roof space.

Fire crews from Abingdon, Didcot and Oxford were all scrambled to the fire at a house on Abingdon Road, Drayton, at about 3pm on Saturday.

Wearing breathing apparatus fire fighters rushed inside to tackle the fire in the roof space using high pressure hose reel water jets before bringing the blaze under control.

No one was injured during the fire, Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service said, as the sole occupier fled the house quickly before raising the alarm.

Station Manager Gary D’Anger said: “The occupier of the property was alerted to the fire by smoke alarms fitted in the house.

"This allowed him to evacuate the house and quickly raise the alarm. This early indication of the fire and the prompt arrival of the fire service undoubtedly prevented the fire from destroying the property.

“The fire fighters had to work in hot cramped conditions to extinguish the fire due to it spreading into voids within the roof.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated but is not thought to be suspicious.
